How to Cut or Chop up Beeswax to Make Lip Balm, Balms, Salves, Body Butter, or Wax Melts

If you've ever tried to cut beeswax, you'll know it's very hard.  The other day I got some new AMAZINGLY delicious smelling raw, unrefined, unfiltered beeswax from a farm, which sells it straight from the bee hive.  I wanted to experiment with this more natural form of beeswax instead of using the pellets, which are already preformed into small pieces for easy use. The pellets are typically filtered and refined, but I like using beeswax that is raw and natural.  You can see in the picture the whitish color of the pellets compared to the raw, unrefined deep yellow beeswax in the picture above.

​So, as I was trying to cut it and shave it with my knife, I was thinking how hard and messy this would be every time I wanted to make a product.  Plus, my knife could hardly cut through the beeswax, so it felt almost impossible to do.  Then, a brilliant idea came to my mind.  I figured that I could melt it down and then pour it into some silicone molds that I had.  Then, I would be able to pop them out once they hardened and keep them for easy use whenever I wanted to make a product.  This was a perfect idea!  I never needed to think about chopping or shaving the hard beeswax again! 

Miraculously, I already had some silicon molds on hand.  They are round truffle-shaped and each one holds .5 ounces.  This was so perfect for making my lip balms as the beeswax was in perfect measurements this way and easy to calculate into my recipes.   

So, that's what I did.  I melted the beeswax in a glass bowl placed in hot water in a pan.

Then, I poured the melted beeswax into my truffle molds.  I waited a few minutes until they were hard and then popped them out.  Now, I have perfectly measured beeswax balls for future use whenever I'm ready to make my products.

You can see tiny dark specs on one of the beeswax balls.  That's because as the bee keeper says, "It will contain some natural impurities."  That's because the beeswax is taken from the wax cappings on honeycombs and that's it - it's not filtered.  Most of these tiny specs fall to the bottom of the jar when I pour it into the molds.
